Sermon: The Gospel of Mark (beginning)

Who were the authors of the Gospels, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost?  We know two were Apostles; Matthew and John and two were evangelists, companions of some of the Apostles.  In this sermon we get to know a little about John Mark.  Companion to the Apostle Paul, likewise to his Uncle Barnabas and called a son by the Apostle Peter.

Some scholars believe Mark’s gospel to be the oldest, the first written.  Whether it was or not, he writes with an urgency.  An urgency to get the word to the growing Christian communities and with an emphasis towards the Gentiles.

Mark gets right to the point.  He opens his gospel with the declaration in Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;  from that brief statement which leaves no doubt about his subject he immediately writes on the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the messenger, John the Baptist, who would foretell the coming Messiah.
